"Pagan Love Song", 1950, Starring Esther Williams, Howard Keel, Rita Moreno and Charles Mauu. Based upon the book "Tahiti Landfall" by William Stone, it is about a school teacher (Howard Keel) who inherits a plantation in Tahiti and finds love as well (what a nice deal, eh?) In this case Tahiti is played by Hawaii, primarily Kauai. And Esther Williams in a black wig and deep tan plays a local girl- or so Keel thinks. Many local extras were used in the filming and slightly over-weight Esther Williams appears so as she was "slightly just six months pregnant" at the time. Actor Charles Mauu, who had a major role, actually was Tahitian, and Rita Moreno, playing a Tahitian girl, would go on years later to win an Academy Award in West Side Story.
Lots of singing and swimming and Kauai scenery.
